Responsibilities

As a Metallurgical Laboratory Technician, you will use photographic and metallographic techniques to evaluate tubes, pipes, plates, castings, welded components, heat-treated parts and coated samples. These evaluations may be performed to determine cause of failure, provide a condition assessment, assess material compliance to a specification, or reverse engineer a part.

    • You will develop a basic understanding of material failure mechanisms and laboratory processes required to document relevant features. 
    • You will document and prepare samples and perform analysis of failed industrial components in our laboratory setting.
    • Maintain consistent and accurate process controls.
    • Maintain production flow through laboratory, by working on multiple projects in parallel.  
    • Take photographs, record data and upload results on project network. 
    • Fully comply with all safe work practices and actively participate in all site safety initiatives.
    • Perform all tasks in a safe manner, adhering to all company, department, and EHS policies and procedures.  (Not sure how this is different from the previous bullet)
    • Work at the direction of Metallurgical Laboratory Manager.

Qualifications

  • Prior metallurgical laboratory experience a plus.
  • Good mechanical aptitude to safely and efficiently operate machining and testing equipment such as band saw, milling machines, lathe, drill presses, hand tools, etc.
  • Good mathematical written skills to accurately analyze and report all types of test results.
  • Must be highly motivated and able to work responsibly without direct supervision in a team environment. Good communication skills to interact with other analysts.
  • Basic problem-solving skills and ability to exchange and explain technical information.
  • Must have good safety awareness and record.
  • Technical report writing skills
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and perform under pressure
  • Ability to maintain positive working relations with client and co-workers
  • Mentoring skills
  • Ability to work extended hours
